Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)
Acquired Brain Injury or ABI- rehabilitation & respite
Quality Rehabilitation/ Respite Care - who should be considered?
Quality Rehabilitation/ Respite Care provides post acute neurobehavioral rehabilitation service for service users with acquired brain injury (ABI). The rehabilitation service is offered to adults 18+. Our service is designed for people who are medically stable and following careful assessment, are considered ready to have potential for increased independence and social integration.
The team.
Our team work with each individual depending on their needs and level of dependency. Having a high ratio of staff enables the team to work closely, helping service users relearn skills lost as a result of their injury or to acquire new skills to help within their rehabilitation.
All dietary requirments are catered for with food prepared and cooked onsite with local fresh produced used when possible.
The building and grounds.
The location of Valley View Barn just outside a Sussex village is conducive to a relaxed and calming atmosphere. Seven of the eight rooms are ground level with en-suit wet rooms. The majority of the rooms have their own private terraces overlooking a Sussex valley and are fitted with the latest call alarm systems plus switch able alarmed doors.
The building while situated mainly on one floor has also had all the thresholds removed and is wheelchair friendly. A glass walk way links the entire centre to the barn.
Service users individualised rehabilitation plans.
Each service users has an individualised rehabilitation plan which includes structured
learning plans, practical daily living skills, social skills training plus much more, depending on the individual's need.
The Staff team and training.
The attention to detail within Quality Rehabilitation care extends not only to the building but to the careful recruitment of the support teams. Training has been a central part of the process to ensure the highest possible care. All staff have completed an induction programme and attend a series of mandatory training courses.
Also within the first few months of starting their post the team undertake the basic Brain Injury Training course to ensure a clear understanding of the rehabilitation programme used at Quality Rehabilitation Care.
On going training is built into the working life of all employees at Quality Rehab/ Respite care using both internal and external trainers.
Individualised care plans
The welfare and rehabilitation of the service users is the first priority of all who work at Valley View Barn. A structured feedback and meeting programme is in place with weekly meetings between members of the team and management, and also the service users to ensure that the rehabilitation is progressing. Feedback, suggestions and ideas are sought to create opportunities for development.
Programme development
All referrals made to the programme are assessed and then discussed with the Service Manager.
Opening a purpose built Barn and stable has given us the ability to change and organise the building to benefit the service users. Behind this a comprehensive rehabilitation programme is continually under review.
Core parts of the programme's development include: Time dedicated to daily handovers; weekly team meetings; regular planned review meetings for each service user. Families are also welcome to add input into the programme.
Other internal training is focused around:
• Brain injury awareness
• None verbal communication
• Social Skills
• Arts and crafts
• Relaxation
• Leisure planning
• Presentation skills
• Gardening
In addition to the group programme visits to the local market town of Hailsham, which includes a leisure centre, are also available. The Leisure Centre includes community based gym, bowling and swimming. All of this is dependant on the assessment by a therapist.
The training can include cooking, planning and budgeting. This can also be carried out within the unit.
